Airports, ferries, buses, taxis and transfers
Getting to Rethymno without the arrival-day stress.
Rethymno does not have its own commercial airport, but it is easy to reach through Chania, Heraklion, or the ferry ports of Crete. Here is how to choose the route that fits your flight, ferry, luggage, budget and first night.
Start here
First decide where you are entering Crete.
Most visitors reach Rethymno through Chania Airport, Heraklion Airport, Souda/Chania port, or Heraklion port. From there, you can continue by bus, taxi, private transfer, or rental car. The best option depends less on distance and more on your arrival time, luggage, group size, and whether you want a car during the trip.
Chania Airport to Rethymno
Chania Airport is often a convenient gateway for Rethymno, especially if your trip also includes western Crete. From the airport, continue by pre-booked transfer, taxi, bus connection, or rental car.
- Good for Rethymno plus Chania-area trips
- Useful if your hotel is west or central
- Check arrival times before relying on buses
Heraklion Airport to Rethymno
Heraklion is Crete’s other major airport gateway and can be the better choice when flights are cheaper, more direct, or better timed. It also works well if you plan to visit Knossos, Heraklion city or central Crete.
- Often has strong international flight options
- Works with bus, transfer, taxi or rental car
- Allow extra buffer in high-season traffic
Ferries to Chania or Heraklion
There is no regular passenger ferry that drops you directly in Rethymno for most visitors. The practical ferry route is usually Athens/Piraeus to Chania/Souda or Heraklion, then onward to Rethymno.
- Overnight ferries can save a hotel night
- Cabins are worth considering for comfort
- Book vehicle space early in summer
Which route should you choose?
If several options look possible, use the arrival style below. The smoothest route is not always the cheapest one, especially after a late flight or overnight ferry.
| Traveler type | Best arrival option | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| First-time visitors | Chania or Heraklion flight + pre-booked transfer | It removes the first-day decision making. A driver can meet you at the airport and take you straight to your Rethymno hotel. |
| Budget travelers | Airport or port + KTEL bus | Intercity buses are usually the best-value option between Crete’s main cities. Check the current timetable before planning around a specific departure. |
| Families or groups | Private transfer or rental car | Luggage, child seats, late arrivals and hotel drop-offs are easier when the onward trip is already arranged. |
| Road-trip travelers | Rental car from the airport | Best if your plan includes Preveli, Arkadi, mountain villages, south-coast beaches or multiple day trips outside town. |
| Athens + Crete trips | Overnight ferry from Piraeus | A good fit if you want to travel by sea, bring a vehicle, or avoid an extra domestic flight. |
How to continue from the airport or port to Rethymno
Once you land or dock, choose your final leg based on comfort, cost and timing.
Private transfer
The calmest choice for late arrivals, families, groups, honeymoon trips and anyone who wants door-to-door service after a long travel day.
KTEL bus
Usually the best budget option between major towns. Use the official KTEL site for current departures because schedules change by season.
Taxi
Useful when you want convenience without pre-booking. Confirm the approximate fare, payment method and pickup point before leaving.
Rental car
Worth it if you want Crete beyond Rethymno town. If you are staying in Old Town, check parking and drop-off instructions before arrival.
Arrival-day checklist for Rethymno
A few small checks can make the first day feel much easier, especially in summer or after an evening arrival.
Confirm your exact arrival point
Chania Airport, Heraklion Airport, Souda/Chania port and Heraklion port all need different onward plans.
Check the final connection
If you are using the bus, confirm the current timetable. If you land late, a pre-booked transfer may be safer.
Ask your hotel about access
Old Town streets can be narrow. Ask where to be dropped off, where to park and whether cars can reach the entrance.
Save offline details
Keep your hotel address, transfer confirmation, bus station, booking references and maps available offline.
Ferry notes for Athens to Crete
If you are coming from Athens, ferries usually leave from Piraeus. For Rethymno, the most practical Crete arrival ports are Chania/Souda and Heraklion. Choose the ferry based on timing, cabin availability, whether you need vehicle space and how you plan to continue to Rethymno.
Cabins can be worth it
Overnight ferry seats are cheaper, but a cabin helps you arrive rested enough to enjoy your first day.
Vehicle tickets need planning
If you plan to bring a car across from Athens, confirm your rental company’s rules and reserve ferry vehicle space early.
Leave time for Piraeus
Piraeus is large and traffic can be unpredictable. Build in time to reach the correct gate and board without rushing.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming Rethymno has an airport
It does not have a commercial passenger airport. Plan around Chania or Heraklion instead.
Choosing a cheap flight without checking transfer times
A low fare can lose its value if you land late and need a costly last-minute transfer.
Booking a ferry without checking the arrival port
Crete is large. Know whether you are arriving at Chania/Souda, Heraklion or another port before planning the onward journey.
Driving into Old Town without a parking plan
Rethymno Old Town is beautiful but not simple for cars. Ask your accommodation for the easiest arrival point.
